Team driver pay split calculator: one truck, two fair paychecks
Enter the team rate (per mile or percent of gross), the week's miles, and how you split: an agreed percentage or the miles each driver drove. The team driver pay split calculator shows each driver's pay.

How the team pay split calculator works
- Team pay = team rate per mile × the truck's paid miles, or team percentage × the truck's gross
- Driver A's share = the agreed percentage, or A's miles ÷ total miles
- Driver A's pay = team pay × A's share
- Driver B's pay = team pay − driver A's pay
EXAMPLE A team truck runs 5,400 paid miles in a week at a team rate of $0.82 a mile: $4,428. Split 50/50, each driver earns $2,214. Split by miles instead, with driver A driving 2,900 of the 5,400, driver A gets about $2,378 and driver B about $2,050.
The bar on the unit tile shows the split. Change the rate, the miles or the split and both paychecks update.
50/50 or split by miles
50/50 vs by miles: 50/50 is simpler and fits teams where both drivers take equal shifts. Splitting by miles fits teams where one driver prefers longer shifts, but it needs clean records from the ELD and can cause arguments over who drove the hard miles.
Team pay per mile: compare it with what each driver would earn solo. A team rate that pays each driver much less per mile than a solo job only works if the miles are far higher.
For owners: the team rate is one cost line. The truck still has to earn enough to pay it and make a profit. Check the whole picture with the truck driver pay calculator, and put a number on what losing a team costs with the driver turnover cost calculator.
Write the agreement down
Team pay, swap schedules, home time and what happens if one driver leaves all belong in writing. The truck driver handbook template has a place for team rules, and an accountant for your trucking company can help with how team pay runs through payroll. When you're running team units, our small fleet dispatch desk books freight that pays for two seats and plans swaps around both drivers' hours.
Settle the split before the first trip and write it down with both signatures. Teams that agree on pay, shifts and home time up front argue far less, and when a team splits up, a written agreement makes the last settlement simple.
Check the split against the settlement every week for the first month, then monthly. Small differences in how miles are counted add up fast on a team truck.
Settle the pay basis first
- Agree whether pay is per mile or a percent of gross
- Decide the split method before the first trip
- Check paid miles against the ELD each week
- Put detention and bonuses in the same agreement
- Sign the agreement, both drivers and the carrier
Team pay split questions
01How is team driver pay split?
Most teams split the team rate 50/50, since both drivers keep the truck moving even while one sleeps. Some split by the miles each drove, which rewards the driver who drives more. Agree on it in writing before the first trip.
02Do team drivers get paid for all miles?
Team pay is usually figured on all the truck's paid miles, then split. Each driver isn't paid separately for the hours they ride in the sleeper. That's why the team rate per mile matters more than either driver's share.
03Do team trucks earn more than solo trucks?
A team truck can run far more miles a week, so gross is usually higher. Whether profit is higher depends on getting freight that pays for speed, since the truck is paying two drivers.
04What if one team driver quits mid-trip?
Put it in the team agreement: how the trip's pay is split up to that point, and how the truck gets home. It's a common source of disputes when nothing is written down.
05How is detention split on a team truck?
Most teams split detention and other accessorial pay the same way as mileage pay. Put it in the team agreement so nobody argues about it at the dock.
06What team rate per mile is fair?
Compare it with what each driver could earn solo, per mile and per week. A team rate that pays each driver less than a solo job has to be made up for with many more miles.
