Our playbooks, calculators and compliance guides are written for owner-operators and fleets of one to ten trucks. They're written by Edwin Horton and checked against the sources cited on each page. This page explains how.
Sources we use
- Rules: the Code of Federal Regulations (through eCFR and the Legal Information Institute), the Federal Register, FMCSA guidance and program pages, and state agencies for state rules.
- Government data: BLS, Census, EIA, IRS, SBA and FTC, as published.
- Industry research: ATRI and ATA reports, cited with the publisher and year. When we rely on trade coverage of a report rather than the report itself, we say so.
- Rankings and deals: one named published ranking at a time, credited, and deals only from company press releases or SEC filings.
- Litigation: published research and court records, stated as reported.
- Companies: software, service and partner facts only from each company's own current pages, with the date we checked.
How facts are dated and shown
Every rule and benchmark we use lives in one source file with its publisher, link and the date it was last checked. On the page, each appears with a source tag you can open to see where it comes from. A fact that hasn't been verified can't be published.
Examples and estimates
Worked numbers, sample fleets, sample weeks and sample reports are labeled as examples. Calculators show their formulas and treat starting values as examples to replace with your own. We never present an example as a result.
What we don't publish
- Invented testimonials, reviews, carrier names, logos, results or statistics.
- Rankings without stated criteria, or our own rankings built from guesses.
- Forecasts presented as facts; named forecasts are quoted with their source and date.
- Rumors about companies or pending cases.
Partners and independence
Partner offers appear only on pages where they fit the reader, are labeled, and link to our disclosure. We don't accept payment to cover a company, and partners don't review or approve our content.
Advice limits
Our content explains rules and options in plain words. It isn't legal, tax, accounting, insurance or HR advice, and pages say so where a decision needs a qualified professional.
Updates
Pages show the date they were last updated. Data pages are refreshed on a schedule tied to their sources: market indicators quarterly, the rule tracker and M&A tracker monthly, cost benchmarks when ATRI publishes its annual report, and tax rates when the IRS issues new notices. Rule pages are updated when a rule changes.
Corrections
If you spot an error, an outdated figure or a changed rule, tell us through the contact page. We check it against the source, correct the page and change its update date. Significant corrections are noted on the page.
