How the name generator works
The generator mixes your word with word lists for four styles, entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
- Classic: solid, traditional words like Keystone, Liberty or Summit, paired with Freight, Transport or Lines
- Modern: shorter, cleaner words like Northline, Clearmile or Tandem
- Regional: words tied to places and landscapes, like Prairie, Bayou or Piedmont
- Family: your family name with "& Sons", "Brothers" or "Partners"
Your own word appears in about half the ideas, and a niche word like Reefer or Flatbed sometimes takes the place of the ending. Hit shuffle for a new set; the same inputs and shuffle count always give the same list.
EXAMPLE With the word "Ortiz" in the classic style, you might see Ortiz Freight, Keystone Ortiz Transport or Granite Lines. Pick one and the door preview shows it in capitals above an example USDOT line, roughly how it would read on a cab door.
Check the name before you use it
A name idea is the start, not the finish. Before you register an LLC, file with FMCSA or order door lettering:
- Search FMCSA registrations for carriers and brokers with the same or a very close name.
- Search your state's business registry where you'll form the company.
- Search USPTO trademarks for the name in transportation services.
- Check the domain and phone listings, so customers can find you.
The name you file goes on both doors with your USDOT number, readable from 50 feet in daylight Vehicle markingLegal or single trade name + "USDOT" number, both sides, sharp contrast, legible from 50 ft in daylight49 CFR 390.21 requires self-propelled CMVs to show the carrier's legal name or one trade name (as filed with FMCSA) and its USDOT number preceded by "USDOT", on both sides, in sharply contrasting letters readable from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stationary.49 CFR 390.21Checked Oct 2026. Short names in plain letters read best.

Planning the trucks too? The what size truck do I need tool matches freight to a 26 ft box, hotshot or tractor-trailer, and the box truck business profit calculator shows what a box truck could earn. Some owners consider buying a franchise instead of starting a brand from scratch; our guide to trucking franchise options covers what you get. When the authority is active, our small fleet dispatch desk can book the first loads with your new name on the rate con.
Say each name out loud the way a broker would on the phone, then spell it the way they'd type it into an email. Names that survive both tests cause fewer missed calls and lost rate cons.
Keep the door lettering simple: your name, USDOT number and nothing that competes with them.

Naming your company: quick answers
01How do I name my trucking company?
Pick something easy to say on the phone, easy to spell in an email, and readable on a door from across a lot. Avoid names close to big carriers or brokers. Then check it with FMCSA, your state's business registry and the trademark database before you file anything.
02Does the name have to be on my truck?
Your legal name or a single trade name filed with FMCSA must be on both sides of each power unit, with your USDOT number, readable from 50 feet. That's another reason to pick a name that's short and clear.
03Can I use a DBA for my trucking company?
Yes, many carriers operate under a trade name. If you do, it's the name you file with FMCSA and show on the doors. Your state decides how DBAs are registered.
04Does this tool check if a name is available?
No. It only suggests ideas. It doesn't check registrations, trademarks or domains, and a name showing up here doesn't mean it's free to use.
05Should the name say what I haul?
It can help customers find you, but it can also box you in. A name with Reefer in it may not suit you if you add flatbeds later. Many carriers keep the legal name general and describe equipment on their website.
06Can I change my company name later?
Yes, but it means updating FMCSA records, insurance, broker setups, door lettering and your bank. It's much cheaper to pick carefully the first time.
