Owner operator factoring that keeps one truck rolling while you plan the second

You run one truck under your own authority. Fuel is due at every stop, the truck note is due on the first, and the broker for last week's load pays in 30 days. Owner operator factoring turns that delivered load into cash in about a day, so the truck isn't parked waiting for a check. If you're planning truck two, it's also the money that carries a new unit through its first month.

How advances arrive

Once a factor approves your account, each delivered load follows the same path: upload, verify, fund. The money reaches you one of three ways.

ACH to your bankMost invoices; cheaper, usually next business dayThe fee per transfer, and the daily cutoff

Break-even view on a door panel

The question for one truck is simple: how many weeks of fixed costs does factoring free up, and what does that cost per month? Enter your own numbers.

If you already hold $27,857 in reserve, you're paying $845 a month for speed you may not need. If you don't, that's the price of not parking the truck. Estimate only.

On the EXAMPLE defaults, a truck grossing $6,500 a week with 30-day brokers has about $27,857 waiting on brokers at any moment. That's more than 14 weeks of $1,900 fixed costs sitting in other people's accounts payable. Factoring at 3% costs around $845 a month to get it now.

How to use the result:

  • No savings, new authority: that $845 is probably the cheapest way to keep running. Few lenders will hand a new MC a line of credit for the gap.
  • Some savings, truck two in six months: factor now, and put part of the freed cash toward the next unit's down payment and its first month of costs.
  • A solid reserve: you're paying for speed you may not need. Try quick pay from your regular brokers, or factor only the slow ones if your contract allows it.

What to look for as an owner-operator

  • No monthly minimum, or a low one. One truck has slow weeks, home time and breakdowns. A minimum turns a week off into a fee.
  • Short term, clear notice. Month-to-month or a short term with a short notice period. You'll want room to renegotiate when truck two arrives.
  • Choice of invoices. The right to keep quick-paying brokers out, if you can get it in writing.
  • Fuel card or advance. Fuel is your biggest weekly expense. RTS Financial publishes a fuel card with an average savings figure of its own RTS Financial fuel cardAverage savings of 45 cents per gallon at 4,000+ stations (RTS figure); bundling with factoring offeredRTS Financial fuel card page: an average savings of 45 cents per gallon at over 4,000 fuel stations nationwide (RTS's own average, not a guaranteed discount); a self-funded card regardless of credit; spending limits, card lock and fuel codes; bundling fuel and factoring promoted for better savings and lower rates. No fuel advance terms published on the page.RTS Financial, fuel cards, 2026Checked Oct 2026; compare what any card actually saves at the stops you use.
  • Broker credit checks in the app. Checking a broker before you take the load is worth more on one truck than on twenty. One bad payer is a month's profit.
  • Non-recourse terms you understand. RTS Financial states it offers non-recourse factoring covering a broker's insolvency or bankruptcy RTS Financial recourse termsNon-recourse: RTS assumes the credit risk if the customer can't pay because of insolvency or bankruptcyRTS Financial trucking factoring page: RTS provides non-recourse factoring, assuming the credit risk if your client doesn't pay, and defines non-recourse as covering a customer that can't pay because of issues like insolvency or bankruptcy. Contract basics

This is general information, not legal advice. Read the contract itself, and ask a professional if anything is unclear.

Term. How long you're committed, and whether it renews on its own. Some contracts run a year and renew on their own unless you cancel inside a short window; miss it and you may be in for another term.

Minimums. A monthly volume floor, with a fee if you fall short. Trade coverage lists $250 to $1,000 or more a month for minimum shortfalls Freight factoring rate and fee ranges (trade coverage)Recourse 1.5-3.0%, non-recourse 2.5-5.0% per invoice; ACH $2-15, wire $10-35FreightWaves contributed article, July 1, 2026: recourse 1.5% to 3.0% per invoice, non-recourse 2.5% to 5.0% (spot non-recourse 3% to 6%); ACH $2 to $15 and wire $10 to $35 per transfer; expedited funding 0.25% to 1.0%; credit checks $10 to $50 per customer; setup $100 to $500; minimum-volume penalties $250 to $1,000+ a month; early termination $500 to $5,000+. Termination. Notice in writing, an early exit fee if you leave before the term ends, and a release letter to your brokers once everything is paid. The factoring contracts guide shows what leaving costs.

The lien. Most factors file a UCC financing statement on your receivables. It's normal, but it shows up when you apply for a loan on truck two. Ask how and when it's released.

EXAMPLE From one truck to two

An owner-operator runs a reefer, grossing about $7,000 a week, with brokers on 30-day terms. Factoring at 3% costs about $910 a month. The freed cash, roughly four weeks of gross, carries the first month of a second truck: insurance, a driver's first paychecks, fuel. Without factoring, the second truck waits until savings cover that first month, which at this fleet's pace might take most of a year. Numbers are EXAMPLE, not a promise of results.

One more habit worth building at one truck: check each broker in the factor's app before you say yes to a load, not after it delivers. A load from a broker the factor won't approve is a load you'd be financing yourself, with no one collecting for you.

Planning truck two, with dispatch

The second truck changes your week. Two sets of loads to find, two drivers' paperwork, two units' check calls. That's where our desk comes in. We find and negotiate loads for both trucks and bring each one to you. You say yes or no, and the broker sends the rate confirmation straight to you. See dispatch for owner-operators for how it works at one truck and what changes at two.

We're not a lender or your accountant. Factoring terms come from the factor you sign with.

Owner-operator factoring questions

01

Does factoring check the broker or me?

Mostly the broker, since the broker is the one who pays. Factors check your brokers' credit and payment history before approving their invoices. They'll also check your authority, insurance and basic business background. Your personal credit score usually matters far less than it would for a loan.

02

How do I upload paperwork from the road?

Through the factor's app. You photograph the signed rate confirmation and BOL, attach or create the invoice, and submit. RTS Financial's app, for example, handles invoice uploads and shows purchase status on iOS, Android and web. Take photos flat, in good light, with all four corners visible.

03

Can I factor just one truck?

Yes. Factoring follows your MC and your invoices, not your fleet size. RTS Financial states it funds all fleet sizes, including owner-operators. Watch for monthly minimums, since a single truck's volume can fall short in a slow month or a week off.

04

Can owner-operators get fuel advances?

Some factors offer a fuel advance against a signed rate confirmation, paid before delivery, and many offer fuel cards. Terms differ by factor and aren't always published. RTS Financial publishes a fuel card program; ask about advance terms when you get a quote.
